The right composite solution starts long before the product reaches site.
On many Fibre-Reinforced Polymer (FRP) projects, engineering and product supply happen separately. A project team develops the design, then approaches a composite materials supplier for the finished product.
But that sequence doesn’t always account for the practical realities of working with composites. Structural requirements, fabrication methods and installation constraints can force changes after the design is already complete.
At Terra Firma, we do more than manufacture and supply composite products. Our in-house engineering team supports projects from early concept design through to Australian manufacturing and delivery, working across electrical infrastructure, water and wastewater, civil construction and outdoor access.
Beyond the product: composite engineering for the complete solution
Every project involving composite materials has its own structural requirements, site conditions and operational demands. Our design and structural engineers work with project teams to understand those requirements and develop a solution around them.
For an electrical facility, that might mean designing cable trench covers around the correct load class, access requirements and electrical safety considerations. For a wastewater facility, it could involve engineering an odour cover system that resists corrosion while allowing safe access for maintenance.
Our composite materials engineering team can assess loads, spans and deflection, determine support requirements, and account for features such as penetrations, hatches and cable entries. We also consider panel weights, sealing requirements and installation methods as part of the overall design.
We design against relevant Australian standards, including:
- AS/NZS 1170 for structural design actions
- AS 3996 for access covers and grates
- AS 4586 for slip resistance
We also provide the drawings, structural calculations and documentation needed to support client reviews and authority approvals.
Why early involvement changes the outcome
You don’t need a confirmed order or a construction-ready project to engage our composite engineering team. We can support the planning and design process before the project reaches procurement.
Specify with confidence
When Terra Firma joins at concept stage, our engineers can address the specific requirements of composite materials early. This allows project teams to specify the right product and load class while avoiding rework later.
Improve buildability
Early engineering also creates opportunities to improve construction methods. On a recent data centre project, Terra Firma’s engineering and product design expertise reduced cable duct installation time by 82% compared with the conventional methodologies.
Reduce site requirements
Lightweight FRP components reduce cranage, manual handling risks and installation crew requirements.
Protect the construction program
Defining the scope early reduces the risk of costly variations and allows us to schedule tooling, production and delivery around your project dates.
These benefits depend on engineering the solution around the project, rather than fitting it into the design afterwards.
From concept design to site delivery

Project teams can engage Terra Firma as a composite materials supplier and engineering partner at different stages. Some come to us with an initial brief and performance requirements. Others already have a concept and need specialist composite materials engineering support to progress the design or secure approval.
Our process adapts to the project:
- Project review and site measure – assess the brief, drawings, specifications and site conditions.
- Design kick-off – confirm structural requirements, interfaces and project deliverables.
- Concept design – develop initial drawings for review and sign-off.
- Detailed engineering – complete structural calculations and refine connections, fixings and other design details.
- Approvals and construction documentation – prepare issue-for-construction documentation where required.
- Fabrication and assembly – prepare fabrication drawings and hand them to the manufacturing team.
- Delivery and installation support – coordinate staged delivery and provide on-site guidance before or after installation.
A nominated Project Manager oversees the process from order to site, coordinating approvals, production and delivery around the construction schedule and any live asset constraints.
Not every project needs every stage. We scope our involvement around the work already completed and the support the project needs.
